Nestled in the savannahs of the Southern Rupununi, Wichabai Ranch is a historic site with a multidimensional focus set on conservation, education, research, and tourism. The surrounding countryside is rugged, open savannahs pocked with some of the oldest mountains on the surface of the Earth, and dotted with ‘bush island’ relics of ancient Amazonian rainforest. On the edge of adventure, you will find yourself at ease and completely surrounded by the giants of Guyana.
More than 100 years ago, Wichabai’s founders built the cattle trail that eventually became the only road from the coast to the savannahs. In the first half of the 20th century Wichabai was a thriving hub for cattle ranching and balata bleeding, but its later involvement in the Rupununi Uprising was the start of its own downfall.
By the 1980s the ranch was sold and became part of Dadanawa Ranch, claimed to once have been the largest cattle ranch in the world. After many years, the old Wichabai was reinstated by a local ranching family that built it into the small community it is today.
Wichabai does have their own airstrip for chartered flights, however if you prefer to drive, the trip offers a spectacular off roading adventure from Lethem where you can absorb the breathtaking views of the indigenous villages.
Once at Wichabai, all your needs are cared for. Each of four spacious and carefully-planned cabins contains one twin room with two double beds, stunning en-suite bathroom and a veranda overlooking the lake, corral and mountains. Inventive meals are made from local ingredients and eaten together with the family. All activities, local drinks and rum cocktails, laundry and a welcome gift basket are included.
Each itinerary is carefully planned to suit the guest’s interests. But whether you are choosing to work with the local research and conservation teams in the field, immerse yourself in traditional indigenous life or just enjoy the freedom of walking, swimming and canoeing in a truly wild landscape, you will be guided by local English-speaking people who truly understand and love their home.
Wichabai offers numerous activities to choose from during your stay at the tranquil ranch oasis. Wichabai Ranch also arranges customised river trips, special events, and expeditions for photographers, explorers and filmmakers.
A one hour flight in a small airplane will take you over hundreds of miles of rainforest and finally into the savannah, landing in Lethem, a small town on the border with Brazil.
You will be met in Lethem and transported 3 hours south to Wichabai Ranch. Being escorted by a trusty 4X4 over rugged trails, passing wild horses, and driving through small Amerindian villages amid spectacular scenery, you will quickly become absorbed into the adventure.

Shamir Khan hails from Yupukari, a small village in the central Rupununi region of Guyana. With deep ties to his community, he has served as a prominent figure, including roles as a tour guide and a member of the Board of Directors for Caiman House Incorporated. His leadership experience also includes serving as Toshao, the chief of his village, where he played a pivotal role in community development and cultural preservation.
Currently, Shamir works as a driver and office assistant at Wilderness Explorers, where he continues to promote eco-tourism and connect visitors with the natural beauty of his homeland. An avid fisherman, Shamir cherishes opportunities to engage with nature, reflecting his commitment to the environment and traditional practices.Â
